The Winner of The Raishady for Best Summer Movie is…

[Knocked Up][1]

Everything else can’t compete. Spiderman 3 turned into WWE Summer Slam: Rage In The Cage. Pirates 3 was better than Spiderman 3, but it wasn’t as “fun” as Pirates 2. Pirates 2 was just awesome following awesome, Pirates 3 was just a cool slow motion explosion (and some other cool bits).

I know the Summer Movie Season just started, but I feel pretty confident about naming Knocked Up the Best Summer Movie of 2007.

Transformers will be a let down. The last “good” Michael Bay movie was The Rock. And that was because Sean Connery was such a badass. And face it, it will never meet your expectations. You’ve had 20 years to construct the perfect Transformers movie. Michael Bay only had like a year. Ocean’s 13 might be entertaining. I think it has to be by default. Usually the 2nd movie in a trilogy is the best, but Ocean’s 12 was pretty forgettable. Hopefully it was the kick the pants Steven Soderbergh needed. Fantastic Four, Jessica Alba. Live Free or Die Hard, pass. The Simpsons Movie, all I have to ask is where is my Futurama Movie. The Bourne Ultimatum could be good. Rush Hour 3 will be like Rush Hour 2 which was like Rush Hour which was like every other Fish out of Water/Buddy Cop movie ever. Superbad will probably be super entertaining, sort of like Knocked Up, but I don’t think it’ll top it.

Stardust could be good. Like really good. I hope it’s good. Like really good.

So, Knocked Up wins. Simple.

Well turns out I didn’t need a reason for week number 3. I made an executive decision – go on a Thursday (Last Thursday 1/18). And it’s a good thing too. Saturday was AcDec, and Sunday was spent putting out fires at work. There wouldn’t have been any time to see Children of Men! I’m such a leader, maybe I should form an exploratory committee.

Anyways, Children of Men. It was delicious, like eating some amazing cake. Watching it, I could feel love.

It may just be the best movie of 2006. If not, definitely the best Science Fiction movie of 2006.

Reasons Why I’ll Never See Children of Men (Ordered by Week):

  1. Joe (pronounced Hugh Jazz)
  2. Freak Ice Storm
What’s your guess for Week 3?

The Best Movie About Mermaids Since Splash

Lady in the Water may be the best movie of 2006. I haven’t decided yet. If you ask me tomorrow, I may say it’s The Departed. But for now, it is Lady in the Water. Yes, the Lady in the Water that got 24% on rotten tomatoes.

I just don’t know how so many people can be so wrong. My guess, too many “Shyamalan-a-ding-dong” jokes. They just poison the water. This guy could make the most universally acclaimed/amazing movie ever, and talking about it – someone will always bring up “Shyamalan-a-ding-dong” and how they figured out the ending of The Sixth Sense. And all that negative thought out there, it just leads to horrible/unfair reviews.

Got an email from Blockbuster yesterday, saying they’re raising my subscription cost,

As a charter member of BLOCKBUSTER Online®, your promotional rate of $14.99* per month was guaranteed through January 31, 2006, and as a courtesy, we’ve extended your special introductory rate an additional two months. Effective April 18th, 2006, your special introductory rate of $14.99* will no longer be available and the price of our three-movies-out plan will increase from $14.99* to $17.99*.

Outrageous! Also a bunch of liars. The fact of the matter is that Blockbuster is hemorrhaging money trying to compete with Netflix and Cable/Satellite. The only reason I signed up with Blockbuster Online in the first place was because it was one of those immunity challenges for FreeMacMini.com. And the only reason I stayed with Blockbuster was because it was $3 less than Netflix. The service was amazing the first couple of months. I’d send a movie back, and get one the next day, the day after at the latest. Now I send a movie back on Monday and I get one on Friday, maybe Saturday in some cases. Yet I continued to stick with Blockbuster because hey, $3 is $3. And now that their rates have gone up to match Netflix, I might give Netflix a spin. I’ve always heard that Netflix has a much better website and a larger selection of titles.

So Blockbuster, seems I’ll have to let you go.

Have you seen Syriana? Go see it. It won’t make sense until at least half way in, but when it does, it’s very rewarding. Plus you’ll end up hating everything and everyone in this world.

Be sure you go see it soon though, I noticed that a lot of people left during the show. The 2nd week box office drop in earnings might even be larger than Serenity’s, considering Narnia just opened and King Kong and Munich are being released soon.

I present to you, the movie of 2006, DOA: Dead or Alive. Directed by Corey Yuen, who also directed The Transporter. So you know it’ll be an awesome movie when you watch it for the ninth time on TBS.

DOA Teaser re-encoded from this.

I’m most impressed by the bra-fu.

Serenity DVD Cover What a crappy cover for such a great movie. “Experience The Ultimate Action Adventure”, what a cheesy tagline. Any of the movie posters would’ve been a better cover. I guess the good news to take from this is that the DVD is being released on December 20th. There is more info and menu screenshots at DVDAnswers

If you haven’t been paying attention, Serenity is the movie sequel to the cancelled Fox series Firefly. Firefly was given the usual Fox treatment, air it on a Friday, show episodes out of order, and preempt episodes with specials like “When Animals Attack”. It was cancelled after 11 episodes and released on DVD, where it sold extremely well. The sales were strong enough to convince Universal to secure the movie rights and to allow Joss Whedon to make Serenity.

Serenity did poorly at the box office. After the first weekend, ticket sales dropped 50%. And that is with strong word of mouth. From what I’ve heard, the people who saw Serenity without watching Firefly/knowing Firefly existed thought it was wonderful. But it still did miserable at the box office. Even with strong DVD sales, it’s unlikely there’ll be sequels to Serenity. And you know, Serenity needs a sequel real bad.

As much as I hate Fox for cancelling Firefly, you still have to appreciate the work they do. They constantly take chances on shows. Some of the best network tv is on Fox. But Fox is a business, and they aim to make money. So they play it smart, and even if they cancel a show, they still put out a DVD box set. If it weren’t for the Firefly box set, I never would’ve watched the entire series and fall in love with the show.

But you know what is amazing, I would’ve sworn that I had never seen Firefly before it was released on DVD, but Long dug this up

Session Start (AIM – vonstroodl:MadTobago1013): Sat Sep 28 01:02:14 2002 [20:39] vonstroodl: firefly’s a pretty good show [20:39] MadTobago1013: and i noticed that there is that one scene where trinity kicks a guards shotgun and flips it over and shoots him in the back that fox skipped over [20:39] MadTobago1013: yea it is
