If I Were Filthy Rich…

I would travel to to London on Sunday November 16 to see

Sun 16 November – TMWRNJ Reunion Special – Many of the cast of the cult BBC 2 show get together for the first time on stage for almost 10 years. Please be aware that most of these people will be doing their current acts rather than material or characters from the show – including Stewart Lee, Richard Thomas, Paul Putner, Emma Kennedy and Trevor Lock. Hopefully Kevin Eldon will also show up, though he hasn’t got back to me yet. The evening will be headlined by a short 10 minute set from defunct double act LEE AND HERRING. This is the kind of gig that only comes along once in a blue moon and will sell out first, so BOOK NOW!

As I’ve mentioned many times before, I love Stewart Lee and I love Richard Herring, and I especially love Lee and Herring together.

Do You Have Relatives From Out Of State?

Are they planning on visiting during the Summer?

Are they planning on driving?

Does their license plate end with a number higher than 800? For example, XXX-900

If the answer is yes to all these questions, do me a solid and let me know.

Long scored an “Out of State” 800 on me. I can’t come back from that. I mean this isn’t like the time where Long got a 40 on the way to Ikea, and I got 2 Z’s. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

Any lead will do. I just need to drive by and beat Long to the punch (haha).

Alternate Route

I learned something from the radiohead experience.

When traveling to a huge show at Fair Park, it’s best to avoid 30. My suggestion, take 45. Sure you drive through some sketchy parts of Dallas, but you get home an hour earlier. Also, invest in a Car Locator

Local music blogger Gorilla Vs Bear was there as well From Gorilla Vs Bear

Steak-mmms?

The impossible has happened. I have eaten Steak! Yes, Steak!

You’re thinking, How? Raishad is a Hindoo. He doesn’t dine on cow.

But I found a loophole/technicality – Buffalo Steak. Isn’t that great. A Buffalo isn’t a Cow. Same family, but I think what is the main difference/validation is that we don’t drink Buffalo milk. At least I don’t.

So last Friday, Surren, myself, and some others went to the Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse in Dallas. And I had

BUFFALO FILET MIGNON Featured on the Food Network Channel as “One of the best steaks in the nation” Seasoned w/ our special blend of spices

So what did I think? Eh. Nothing special. I mean compared to the amount of crap I get whenever I go out to eat and someone else has steak and makes a comment like “You don’t know what you’re missing”, it was sort of a let down. I’ve eaten better meat.

I had it “Medium” since that was what Long recommended. And you know, I think I would’ve preferred it “Well Done”. I really enjoyed the outside. That was tasty. The meat in the inside – not so much. But then as I understand it, you’re not supposed to order a steak “Well Done”. What’s up with that?

So in conclusion, I’m not missing anything.

Cars! Cars! Cars! How do you like it?

Well it finally happened on Spur 408

The RAV4 hit 30,000 miles. 2 Years and about A Week after I first drove off the Don Davis Toyota Lot.

So what do I think of it after all this time/miles? It’s still brilliant. There isn’t a compact SUV out there I would trade it in for. Now it’s not perfect, but of all the things I desire in a car, it covers them pretty well.

If you know me well, when purchasing big ticket items, you know I like to focus on one feature to a fault. Off the top of my head, when buying my last digital camera I really wanted a wide angle lens. So, I got a Panasonic DMC-FX01. It’s a decent camera, but low light performance is noisy. So when I was looking for a car, I was focused on a car that can hold stuff – specifically a 27″ CRT TV. And you know what, the RAV4 excels in holding stuff. It can even fit a 40″ LCD TV (more on this later). A feature that I used 4 times in the last few months. Yet it also drives well, gets good mileage, and looks good.

The one thing I wish I could improve – road noise. It’s a little noisy sometimes. I have a feeling, I can’t back it up, but my Taurus was a lot quieter.

So for the next model – Toyota, make it quieter, give me a diesel option, more tie downs in the rear, and a 6sp transmission. And don’t take the tire off the rear door.

Thanks!

Calm down, Charlie Brown

Today started off with a whimper.

I wanted to be stuck in traffic. I wasn’t feeling that great. But the Universe just had to twist the knife and make today Columbus Day. Kids aren’t in school. People are taking the day off. Families are going to the fair. Thus, no traffic. I was cruising to work at 70+ mph. Sometimes it’s nice to be caught in traffic. I wanted a slow start. Sort of ease into the day, by sitting my car listening to music. It was so bad – when I got to my exit, I was thinking of skipping it and taking the long way. I didn’t.

This week is going to be rough though. I have a project due next week for CSE 5321, Software Testing. Originally, our team started with 5 people. Then a guy dropped early on. Then another guy dropped much later. Here’s a ProTip: If you’re going to drop a class and you’re on a team, don’t wait until someone calls you to find out why you aren’t at the meeting to announce your intentions. It’s just bad form.

Plus my birthday is coming up on Saturday. Who wants to face their own mortality when you’re supposed to be knee-deep in Increment 1?

The sorta good news is that 2 guys offered to join our team. But, they’re in the on-campus section. I’m taking the class online. We aren’t supposed to mix. I emailed the Professor, hopefully he’ll allow it.

And in more sorta good news, I hit a stretch of Supergrass on the way home. The genius that lives inside my iTunes and sets up my smart playlists for my iPod, put a full album on there. Supergrass is one of the great overlooked bands

And in more awesome news, the new Radiohead album is coming out on Wednesday. I ordered the discbox – so I’ll get the actual cd + extras in December, but I’ll get the digital download with everyone else on Wednesday. I think that’ll sort of balance the week out. Normally I’m gorging myself on live recordings before a new Radiohead cd. But this time, I’ll be hitting it fresh. I’m really excited about that. I’m also really excited about a studio version of Nude. Side note: I’ll have to get a record player. I don’t have one.

How I Got The Greatest Deal Ever?: A True Story

So after my cousin’s wedding, my dad was saying that he needed a new video camera. He’s been using a Panasonic VHS-C camcorder for the longest time. VHS-C stands for VHS-Compact. Back then, it was VHS-C and Video8 (8mm) fighting it out.

I started looking. What I found made me sad. It seems MiniDV was falling out of favor with consumers (stupid consumers!) and manufacturers (stupid manufacturers!). It seems they were both moving to tape-less storage – Hard Drives, Flash Memory, and mini DVDs (mini DVDs are shit, shit, shit). The only new miniDV cameras were the expensive prosumer/professional stuff and cheap cheap crap. Nothing for me. It was looking like I would have to scour eBay to find a decent camera.

I was set on looking for an Canon Elura 100. The last of the Elura range. It had the features I wanted – a mic input and a shoe, and it came out recently enough that it was still sort of cheap. What you’ll find is that the really good cameras, would actually appreciate in value on eBay.

But, I had a feeling. Let me check Fry’s. See if they had anything with red tags or open box. And in the glass case, I found a Panasonic PV-GS500. It was one of the good ones (it has a focus ring!). You can buy one new for about $700. Open box at Fry’s? $189. I had to buy it. Had to.

So I bought it. And it was really strange. From the guy who got it out of the glass case, to the cashier – they all mentioned what a great deal I was getting. It made me a little uneasy. What did they know that I didn’t. I tried it out in the store, and it seemed fine. There was a bit of scuffed plastic, but otherwise fine. On the box, it had a note “mismatched s/n”. Like someone performed the old “switcheroo”. And looking at the stickers on the box, the price had been lowered 4 times. Meaning that it was returned 4 times, but who knows?

I shot some video. I had 15 days to try it out. So I shot video. Tried out the mic input. Capturing via Firewire. And it’s been great. I could find no fault with it. Video looks excellent.

So, as far as I’m concerned – The Greatest Deal Ever.
