Galveston, 1900

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

Ike is all over the news. And in every article, the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 is mentioned. And in the reference, they all mention the same set of facts – Galveston was wealthy; the city was only 9ft above sea level at the highest; Isaac Cline tried to warn everyone, but they didn’t listen or it was too late. It’s boring. Like an encyclopedia entry. Wouldn’t it be exciting to read what the people in the 1900s would have to say about that hurricane?

Luckily, The Times has made their entire archive available online, from 1785-1985.

One of the nice things about living in the DFW Metroplex is that great bands usually pass by on their way from/to Austin. Of course, around ACL and SXSW are usually the best times to be on the lookout. The latest awesome band that I’ve always wanted to see and that is passing through, is Mogwai.

Mogwai! Not only are they cute and furry, they’re an amazing post-rock band.

Mogwai will be performing this Saturday at the Granada Theater. And since the tickets are not through Ticketmaster, they’re a reasonable $18 + $3.50 (convenience fee).

Admittedly, I’ve always wanted to see Mogwai in an outdoor setting. But, I can’t be choosy. The fact is, I don’t live in the UK, so who knows when they’ll be by again?

So, my favorite Mogwai song?
R U Still In 2 It?

If you want something a little more representative of Mogwai (instrumental, loud, building)
