How to save a life

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

This season of Scrubs has been hit or miss. You had some good episodes and you had some okay episodes, making for a pretty okay season. Then there was the episode last night, My Lunch. That episode was epic. I don’t think I’ve ever been so affected by a tv show (that close to crying). John C. McGinley should win awards and awards. Dr Cox and Dr House are fighing an ongoing war in my heart for “Favorite TV Doctor”, and last night’s episode really gave the edge to Dr Cox. It’s going to be a very exciting last 4 episodes. So just a reminder, Scrubs is still on. Watch it.

I was thinking of putting a clip up, but it might ruin the episode.

The Joy of Spring

Here was my weekend:

On Saturday, I went up to school to work on my project for Algorithms. Turns out Knuth-Morris-Pratt are jerks. Huge jerks. Came home and was still working on it. But I had something in my throat. You know that feeling, when you’re about to be sick. That feeling you get in your throat that you want to scrape out, that feeling that won’t go away no matter how much you gargle Listerine. I had that feeling. So I went to sleep, after watching that delightful young ragamuffin Lindsay Lohan on SNL.

On Sunday, I woke up and felt terrible. That feeling had progressed. Constant runny nose (someone forgot to close the tap apparently), coughing, headache, and a sore throat. I alternated between sleeping and working on my Database Project. I also cancelled my subscription to Blockbuster Online. And got this in my email a few minutes after,

We have processed your request to cancel your BLOCKBUSTER Online® 3 at a time, Unlimited rents membership.

Because we value you as a customer, we’d like to offer you another chance to enjoy all that BLOCKBUSTER Online has to offer. Please consider if one of the following promotional membership options could be right for you:

3 at a time 6 month Special, Unlimited rents – $ 15.99 you will receive unlimited movies, up to 3 at one time plus one e-coupon each week for a free in-store movie rental.* At the end of the six months, your monthly membership will return to the rate offered to new members….

I’m sorry Blockbuster, you had your chance. And in the time between cancelling and receiving that email, I signed up for Netflix. And Netflix, wow. It’s interface is amazing. I actually enjoy using Netflix. And it makes sensible recommendations. So I’m sorry Blockbuster, I won’t fall for your tricks. I went to sleep early. Didn’t even stay up for Mission Hill, my favorite Sunday Night cartoon. I should really get the DVD set.

On Monday, that’s right, I took a sick day. I couldn’t talk without my voice trailing off and since my job involves me talking on the phone for the better part of 8 hours, I could miss a day. Also I was still having epic coughs. I emailed the TA about a question I had on my DB project and within hours, an announcement comes that the project has been changed. I would like to think it was as a result of my question, since the change answers the question I had. And the best part about today, I got the CD I ordered, Friends Again – Trapped & Unwrapped. For a sample, click here. “State of Art” is my all time favorite song, and I just had to have the CD. Even if it meant spending $21 through Ebay (beats the £50 on Amazon UK).

Got an email from Blockbuster yesterday, saying they’re raising my subscription cost,

As a charter member of BLOCKBUSTER Online®, your promotional rate of $14.99* per month was guaranteed through January 31, 2006, and as a courtesy, we’ve extended your special introductory rate an additional two months. Effective April 18th, 2006, your special introductory rate of $14.99* will no longer be available and the price of our three-movies-out plan will increase from $14.99* to $17.99*.

Outrageous! Also a bunch of liars. The fact of the matter is that Blockbuster is hemorrhaging money trying to compete with Netflix and Cable/Satellite. The only reason I signed up with Blockbuster Online in the first place was because it was one of those immunity challenges for FreeMacMini.com. And the only reason I stayed with Blockbuster was because it was $3 less than Netflix. The service was amazing the first couple of months. I’d send a movie back, and get one the next day, the day after at the latest. Now I send a movie back on Monday and I get one on Friday, maybe Saturday in some cases. Yet I continued to stick with Blockbuster because hey, $3 is $3. And now that their rates have gone up to match Netflix, I might give Netflix a spin. I’ve always heard that Netflix has a much better website and a larger selection of titles.

So Blockbuster, seems I’ll have to let you go.
