Frisbee golf is the best golf

Friday, December 30th, 2005

Yesterday, I went up to Denton with some cousins to see my other cousin and we played some frisbee golf. Apparently, that’s what he does now. It’s free, he lives right by the park, and it’s a fun way to kill time. And even though I was doing really bad, I enjoyed it. Mainly cause everyone else was only doing marginally better, there were no superstars. There was one guy who joined us who was pretty awesome, but he was pretty nice about being better than everyone. I did have some good throws, but those were scarce. I even avoided getting my frisbee stuck in water until the last hole.

I also got really good at Monkey Target in Super Monkey Ball. It really is the best multiplayer game, even better than Monkey Fight. Surren perfected it though, he cracked 10k. That was amazing. Of course after that, we had to stop playing.

Also, the “Best Pizza in Denton” isn’t really the best pizza. Dominoes is better. And I can’t prove it, but I think it caused me to get sick. Cause I was fine all throughout the night, playing Super Monkey Ball and stuff. It was only when I got home and was getting ready to sleep did my nose magically fill with snot. Then when I woke up this morning, I had the ickiness in the back of the throat. It has to be the pizza.

So yesterday was definitely the most exciting day of the break, and it looks it’s going to be the winner since I have nothing planned for New Year’s Eve. That’s usually the case most years, not knowing what I’ll be doing on New Year’s Eve until the last minute. Usually something happens, but I’m not feeling so lucky this year.

I present to you, The Greatest Keyboard Ever, the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000

Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000

I bought this keyboard because I needed a USB keyboard, and I love ergonomic keyboards. My first one I had was a Microsoft Natural Elite that I got with my K6-2 400. I used that until the it started sending garbage to the screen and replaced it with a Dell OEM ergonomic keyboard, which I used until just a few weeks ago when I got the Natural 4000.

This keyboard is a dream to use. I don’t know if you can tell in the picture, but the keys are at an angle, so it’s not like regular ergonomic keyboards. The keys are oriented so they’re facing your hand, if that makes sense. My only complaint is that the 6 is on the left half (on the Dell it was on the right half). So I’m constantly hitting ‘7′ when I mean ‘6′. Also, the “Zoom” is sorta useless, unless you use Word a lot. It’d be nice if you could remap it to “Magnify” or “Scroll”. And a USB hub would’ve been nice. But other than those small things, it’s a pleasure to use. You don’t want to stop typing. And props to Microsoft for providing very nice keyboard drivers for MacOS X. You can configure most everything.

I got it from ZipZoomFly for $41.99 with Free Shipping and a Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 thrown in. It’s the OEM version, so be sure to buy a cable or something.

Deathrace 2005

I’m a commuter now, and as a result I have to share the roads with people who shouldn’t be allowed to cross the street by themselves. My biggest problem, is when these people don’t use their indicators. There are two general situations on the highway where people don’t feel they have to use their blinkers.

The first, merging on to the highway. I often find myself in front of a person who just change into the leftlane without warning, and often before the solid white ends, so it’s a surprise as well. And most of the time, they somehow don’t think it’s worthwile to use their turn signals. So I often notice their car in my side mirror changing lanes just as I’m about to.

The second, getting out of the fast lane. I think this one stems from the fact that other people just aren’t as nice as I am. I’m usually in the fast lane when I’m driving home. When I notice someone is coming up behind me, I usually get out of the lane and let them pass. But it seems people aren’t used to that, and they jump into the right lane. And since they’re in a hurry, they usually don’t signal.

Those are both common situations, you’d figure they’d happen to the people who don’t signal, and maybe they’ll realise that they should start signalling.

I also upgraded to Wordpress 2.0.

Boo-urns

I think I overloaded AOL Radio’s servers. After my last post, their servers just couldn’t handle all those extra listeners I sent their way. As a result, I can’t get the Britpop station anymore. It’s not listed on the Mac AOL Radio client nor is it on Winamp. Awful.

I need a third day

Monday, December 19th, 2005

When you’re working, the weekend flies by. Those 2 days are like nothing. It’s fleeting. Ephemeral.

I saw King Kong on Saturady. I feel asleep twice. Once in the beginning and then at the end. Not because the movie was bad, I was just tired. But the movie wasn’t great either. The box office reflected that, only $50 million. It was entertaining, you can’t get enough of Kong beating up dinosaurs. But I just didn’t “believe” it. I’m not crazy, I know it’s fantasy. It’s just the idea of Kong being a sort of “brilliant beast”, I just couldn’t embrace. So in conclusion, it’s no Syriana.

Also, Buy.com has a warehouse in Addison. You can probably get by with the free shipping, instead of springing for FedEx 2nd Day.

Geostationary Magic

Jeremy Clarkson has us Americans (me) pegged. I love American highways, with their wide lanes and straightness. There is no finer feeling than driving down a straight road at 65 mph with the right music coming from the radio. It’s not even a matter of having a fast car or a convertible, I drive a Taurus. The only thing it has going for it is the view, with the cab forward design, it has a large windshield.

I bring this up, because I spent a lot of time on the road today. In addition to driving to work, this morning I drove up to a job fair hosted by Dice in Plano. I decided to take the long way, 20 to 635 to 75, because on Thursday I have an interview with Raytheon in Garland, and I wanted to see how long it’d take. And I really did enjoy the drive. Granted it wasn’t in the morning, so no real traffic to deal with, but it was fun. And my iPod was batting a thousand. Sometimes I swear that my iPod’s shuffle has a telepathic link to me, every song was money. The music is an important part, if I had to listen to local radio, it would’ve been unbearable.

Local radio is just horrible. There is no real commercial station that I like, and my favorite station, 88.7 KTCU, isn’t available throughout the metroplex. Once you get past the airport, reception is spotty. But luckily there is satellite radio. My desktop has been out of commission lately, thus no music when I’m home. So I’ve been listening to a lot of XM Radio via AOL Radio. It’s really fantastic. I’ve been listening to the Britpop station, and it’s great. I’ve noticed they like to play “Fake Plastic Trees” by Radiohead a lot, but I’m fine with that. If I didn’t have all this music and an iPod, I would seriously consider satellite radio. All you need is a traffic station and you’d be set.

The only problem with satellite radio is the two competing companies in the US, Sirius and XM. It’s not like cable and satellite tv, where the delivery medium is different, but the content is the same. They each have their own custom radio stations. So you have to take a risk when buying the hardware, cause you’ll be locked in to that provider and their playlists. But I like what XM Radio is doing with AOL, letting you listen to their stations for free. I have no idea what Sirius is playing, so if I was seriously considering satellite radio, I’d go with XM.

BTW, if you’re on Windows, you can listen to XM Radio with the latest Winamp.

Have you seen Syriana? Go see it. It won’t make sense until at least half way in, but when it does, it’s very rewarding. Plus you’ll end up hating everything and everyone in this world.

Be sure you go see it soon though, I noticed that a lot of people left during the show. The 2nd week box office drop in earnings might even be larger than Serenity’s, considering Narnia just opened and King Kong and Munich are being released soon.

Phew, for a minute there

The British have a word, gutted. It’s an amazing word. It packs so much emotion and feeling into one simple word. Gutted. It’s much more than sad or disappointed can ever hope to convey. Let’s try it.

I’m absolutely gutted.

I found out today that I’m not getting an offer from Software Architects. Last week I got a call from a recruiter there that said it was looking good, there was a really good chance I’ll get an offer. I called him back today, and found out there is no chance. What changed? The regional VP cut the number of openings from 6 to 4. And then I died on the inside.

Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads.

Network Printing?

This is why you should buy printers with good crossplatform network drivers.

Also the White Stripes suck.
